About Dr. Catherine T. J.
Dr. Catherine T. J., is born on December 16, 1968 at Kochi, Kearala. She has completed her schooling in Fathima Girls High School, Fort Kochi with 90% and Pre-degree course at St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam with 96% of marks. Her B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering is completed with 81% marks in 1991 and got into REC, Calicut, at present NIT, Kozhikode, through GATE with a score of 82 percentile. She completed her M. Tech in Power Electronics from there with honours in the year 1993. Her stint for learning got her enrolled in the PhD programme of Anna University in the area of Flexible AC Transmission systems with the title ‘Modelling and Simulation of Integrated Power Flow Controllers’ which is completed in January 2020.
She possess the prestigious ‘Cambridge International Certificate for Teachers And Trainers’ certificate at professional level with distinction by university of Cambridge, London. In addition, Certification from IVERSITY after completing the course "Modelling and Simulation using MATLAB" by Iversity, through MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) provider based in Bernau bei Berlin, Germany.
She is a member of various professional societies like Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE –LM8088), International Association of Engineers (No. 152499); International Society for Research and Development (M4150901405); Society of Digital Information and Wireless Communications (ID 27425). In addition, she is the reviewer of COMPEL: The International Journal for Computation and Mathematics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, indexed in SCIE (Clarivate Analytics) and Scopus.Her Career started with the Assistant professor post in Kerala Agriculture University in 1999 and then in Ballary Engineering College, now Ballari Institute of Technology and Management, Ballari, Karnataka in the year 2004. After shifting to Chennai in the year 2009 to work as Assistant professor at Jaya Engineering College, she joined the present Institution, RMK College of Engineering and Technology in the year 2010. She is working as Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering for the past 10 years handling the core engineering courses like Electrical Machines, Transmission and Distribution, Power electronics, Solid State Drives, Special electrical machines, Flexible AC Transmission Systems, High Voltage DC Transmission, Power electronics for Renewable Energy systems etc.
She has published 7 papers in reputed, peer reviewed International Journals and presented 20 papers in National/International Conferences. Received the best paper award for the paper ‘A Power Management Strategy for PV-Battery Hybrid Energy System using Three Port Fully Reconfigurable Converter in International Conference on Research advancements & Challenges in Engineering Sciences (ICRACE’20), at Velammal institute of Technology, Chennai on March 7, 2020.
The project “Driver Awakening System in Automobiles Using Lane Correction and Automatic Braking” under her guidance received funding from Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) for the Student Project Scheme (SPS) for the year 2019. The same is selected by TNSCST for filing the patent application.
She has guided more than 20 student projects and at present 5 batches of students are doing projects under her guidance. Being mentor for 18 UG students, she plays a vital role in the overall well-being of student community. She has been the coordinator for EEE Students’ Association, conducting Students Symposiums, Students’ projects, etc. she has been the editor for the college magazine ‘Bhoomika’ at BITM and EEE department newsletter ‘Luminon’ at RMKCET.
She was organizing committee member for workshops and conferences conducted in the EEE department and arranged guest lectures related to Electrical Engineering field by eminent personalities from both academics and industry. As the EEE department NBA Coordinator, maintained files regarding NBA accreditation process of the college and the EEE department is accredited with NBA with the top marks of 707.
She delivered the presentation during the faculty development programme on 11th December 2015, also in the Anna University approved faculty development programme on ‘Electrical Machines-II’ during December 2018 and one session in the Three Days Workshopon ' OBE and Accreditation Process' at RMKCET during 17th - 19th June 2019.
Being an active member of ISTE, she organized workshops titled " Voice Disorder less Oral-Aural transfer of information in classrooms" in 2014, " Awareness of Cancer" in 2015, and one day seminar on "Defensive Driving Techniques" in 2017. Also, organized ISTE sponsored Health Check Up in collaboration with Manitha Neyam Charitable Trust at at RMK College of Engineering and Technology in 2018.
She has attended several workshops and faculty development programmes on various subjects like Learning and Leading , ‘Student Psychology’, College Companion, Effective Teaching, academic excellence, for understanding the present generation student community; and in the technical subjects of Opportunities and challenges in world class Manufacturing, Digital Transformation with Social, Mobile, Analytics & Cloud (SMAC), Data Analytics using Python, Application of Soft Computing Techniques for Electrical Research, Applied Soft Computing, Enterpreneurship Development, Intelligent Controllers Application To Power System, Research Level Issues & Trends in Model Based Image Segmentation etc. for updating with the latest trends in engineering.

Perhaps this proves with her daughters cracking the most prestigious exams of our nation, namely IITJEE and NEET. Under her guidance and care, her elder daughter completed Engineering in IIT Madras, did her MS in Johns Hopkins University and the younger one is doing MBBS. Hope her life becomes an inspiration to all those teachers in college as well as in their own homes!
