About Pradipta Purkayastha

Professor Pradipta Purkayastha obtained his bachelors and masters degrees from the

University of Calcutta in 1996 and 1998, respectively. His subject of study was Chemistry with

specialization in Physical Chemistry. He qualified the GATE and NET in 1998 and 2000,

respectively. He did his Ph.D. from Jadavpur University in 2002 where he focused his works

toward spectroscopy and photophysical processes. After his Ph.D., Prof. Purkayastha went for

post-doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA, where he worked on protein

folding and dynamics of protein polymerization using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. He

returned from USA in 2004 to join as lecturer in Chemistry at the Birla Institute of Technology

and Science (BITS), Pilani. He was promoted to the position of Assistant Professor in 2007.

After a four and a half year long stay at BITS Pilani, he joined the Indian Institute of Science

Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata in 2009. He was promoted to Associate Professor in

2013 and full Professor in 2018.

Prof. Purkayastha has teaching experience of more than sixteen years in national level institutes

and research experience of more than twenty one years of which sixteen years as an independent

researcher. His present research interests include studies on the modalities and modulations of

host-guest interactions and their applications in biological environments; synthesis, spectroscopy

and applications of metal nanoparticles and nanoclusters in nanomedicines and biological events,

and using fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy

(FCS) to investigate the details of small molecule dynamics with single molecule resolution.

Prof. Purkayastha has guided 8 students for their Ph.D. and has publishes more than 100 research

papers in reputed national and international journals. He has completed 6 externally funded

research projects and 2 are in progress. He has attended 55 national and international conferences

and delivered 31 invited lectures. He is a life member of the Chemical Research Society of India

(CRSI), Indian Society for Radiation and Photochemical Sciences (ISRAPS), Indian Association

for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Indian Photobiology Society (IPS), Eastern India

Horticulture and Biotechnology Centre, and International Journal for Research under Literal

Access (IJRULA). He is also member of the American Chemical Society and the American

Nano Society. His contributions to science and its development have been recognized by the

Department of Science and Technology, Government of India by awarding the Fast Track

Project for Young Scientists in 2006, Outstanding Faculty in Science Award by Venus

Foundation in 2018 and Research Ratna Award by the International Journal for Research under

Literal Access (IJRULA) in 2019. Prof. Purkayastha is also a fellow of the West Bengal

Academy of Science and Technology (WAST).
