About Dr. Suresha Giriyapura Shivalingamurthy
Dr. Suresha G S, Senior Scientist, Biochemistry, ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore,
has been working in the field of Sugarcane biochemistry and molecular biology for last eleven
years. In the field of sugarcane biochemistry, he has significant contributions in exploring
sugarcane germaplasm and identification of red fleshed Saccharum robustum genotypes as
potential source for antioxidant compounds. As part of this study, he has identified and
characterized major antioxidant compounds (luteolin, Apigenin 7-O-glucoside, Luteolin 7-O-
glucoside and Quercetin 3-O-Galactoside), Anthocyanidin glucosides (Pelargonidin 3-O-glucoside,
Cyanidin 3-O-glucoside and Peonidin-3-O-monoglucoside). Besides, his expertise in molecular
biology has been utilized for understanding the molecular mechanism of sucrose accumulation in
sugarcane. He has involved in development of expression profiles of sucrose metabolizing genes
and enzymes in sugarcane. His experience in the field of molecular biology and biotechnology has
awarded with Indo-Australian Career Boosting Gold Fellowship from Department of Biotechnology,
Government of India. As part of this fellowship, he got an opportunity to work as visiting scientist
with sugar research team at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization
(CSIRO) Brisbane, Australia for two years. As part of this programme, he has identified two novel
invertase inhibitors and established the functional role of these inhibitors in regulation of sucrose
accumulation in sugarcane. He has also identified three maturity genes and studied their
expression during early floral induction in sugarcane. In continuation of post-doctoral work, he has
been awarded with early career research project on subcellular targeting of invertase inhibitor
proteins; a novel approach to enhance sucrose yield in sugarcane, funded by Science and
Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government
of India. Apart from these, he has also been involved in multidisciplinary research projects such as
development of sugarcane transgenic for insect pests resistance and functional characterization of
novel Bt isolates; development of drought transcriptome of wild sugarcane cultivars, value addition
to sugarcane juice by developing technologies for production of juice powder, liquid jaggery and
sugarcane juice concentrates and exploring sugarcane biomass and bagasse for converting into
fuels and chemicals. He has been actively contributing in several externally funded projects as
Principal investigator/Co- investigator. He has published more than 35 research papers in national
and international journals, conference proceedings and book chapters.
