About Dhammaratna Jawale

Dhammaratna Jawale is a media researcher and academician from Maharashtra, India. He
is currently working on his doctoral research on ‘Sociology of Digital Exclusion in India’ from the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University. He is a recipient of University Grants Commission’s flagship Research Fellowship (MHRD, Govt. of India) and is currently a Senior Research Fellow. Dhammaratna is Asia-Pacific Youth Ambassador for UNESCO’s 'Global Alliance for
Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy' (GAPMIL), a groundbreaking project to promote Media and Information literacy amongst citizens. As one of the 12 global youth
ambassadors for this project, led by UNESCO and supported by SIDA (Swedish International Development Agency, Govt. Of Sweden), he is responsible to operationalize UNESCO’s Global Action plan on Media and Information Literacy. Along with being a research fellow he is also working as a visiting faculty across various Media, Communication and Journalism institutes. He was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Tilak Maharashtra University, Pune. He also worked as Assistant Professor & Production Manager at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai for an initiative called CLIx (Connected Learning Initiative) by CEIAR (Center for Education Innovation and Action Research). CLIx is an innovative collaboration seeded by Tata Trust in partnership with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS, India) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA). With an eclectic set of experiences through professional and academic engagements, Dhammaratna has also published several academic and non-academic writings and has presented his research at various National and International conferences and workshops. Dhammaratna is passionate about understanding the multifarious nuances of New Media, Digital Divide and their interplay with Inclusion/Exclusion studies especially in South Asian context. He was a part of a pilot research project conducted by 'Obama-Singh Higher Education Knowledge Initiative', a cross-country research project by University of Pune (India) & University of Massachusetts (USA) on 'Inclusive Universities: Linking Diversity, Equity and Excellence for the 21st Century'. Recently he got selected to be a part of the Global Winter School-2020, a unique exchange program for international students by Cultural Bridge (Berlin, Germany) in partnership with UNESCO New Delhi Office, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (Germany), Global Shapers Community-New Delhi (an initiative of World Economic Forum) and Young Indian's Confederation of Indian Industry (Delhi). The theme for GWS-2020 was ‘Continuity through Change: Understanding the Ruralscape through a Glocal (Global+Local) Lens’ and it aimed to ground international youth in local realities while giving a global orientation to domestic participants. Participants from all over the world were selected through multi-level extensive assessments with focus on connecting cultures and breaking geographical boundaries across continents. Dhammaratna has also completed a 2 credit course by GIAN (Global Initiative of Academic Network, MHRD, Govt. of India) on ‘Studying Gender, Digital Labour and Globalization: Theory and Methods’ conducted by Prof. Dr. Radhika Gajjala (Bowling Green State University, USA). Dhammaratna has a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Media & Communication Studies (Media Research Specialization), Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Media and Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) with specialization in Statistics. He has cracked University Grant Commission’s academic qualifying examinations like JRF (Junior Research Fellowship), NET (National Eligibility Test) and SET (State Eligibility Test) in first attempt. Apart from his research interests he enjoys playing Harmonica, Flute and Melodica in his spare time. He resides in culturally vibrant Pune city.
