About Binayyak Bhusan Roy
When I was a high school student, academics was not really my strength. I always wanted to leave it as soon as possible, because for me it was a burden. However, once I was introduced to the subject of Physics, things changed and I was really looking forward to studying something. It had become my dream from that point onwards to perform research in this field. Being an undergraduate student majoring in Physics, it had provided me with a platform to perform research, my dream from childhood. During my first year I got the opportunity under Prof. P. Panigrahi to work in the field of Quantum Computing, at IISER-K. This internship was my eye-opener for the huge ocean which lay ahead. I began using up most of my college time to do research and work with different professors, all across the globe, on different topics. I finally fixated myself on theoretical physics. I started exploring the field of Gravitational and Stellar Astrophysics heavily, reading up books, getting accustomed to different coding languages etc. The effect research internships and conferences have had on my undergraduate life is immeasurable in terms of the experience that it has given me. I believe the best way to understand any subject is to perform it- simulate it-explain it. I have gone on to do internship at various places at IIT Mandi, under Dr. Arti Kashyap, at University of Macquarie (Sydney) under Dr. Devika Kamath and at BITS-Pilani (Goa Campus) under Dr. Gaurav Dar. I am still exploring many projects, and wanted to explore a bit a experimental Physics as well before I graduated so that I know what I would like to pursue. The field of Physics interests me the most because it forces me to always retrospect and search for the truth. One could learn the tools of Physics and apply it in random spheres of life, that’s what we are encouraged to do at my institute, St. Stephen’s College (University of Delhi). Recently, I have been working in the field of parallel computing and machine learning and it’s fairly easy to see how intertwined this fields are, parallel computing gave me the idea of how it is developing by directly incorporating the laws of Physics. Studying Physics has been a passion of mine ever since I was introduced to it, in standard 6. Having come to St. Stephen’s College, was a blessing as well,, because it forces you to go out of your way and do Physics with various outlook. It isn’t just the academics that’s great here, it is also the support of the faculty. The Principal, Prof. John Varghese, supported me with all of my endeavor so that I would be able to actively pursue research. It is in this very college where various professors have helped me participate and win at presentations at different institutes. For my most important decisions of my career, I would always run of to Prof. Geetanjali Sethi and she would always have time for me and my queries. My classmates are nonetheless, it was in my second year that having formed a team for University Physics Competition we ended up with a Bronze medal in that international event. Physics has indeed changed my life drastically. It is true for anybody who studies it with his/her heart, it gives you so many takes of anything that you almost develop a view for anything. Doing Physics, also allows you to explore the field of Mathematics and Computing. All fields of Natural Sciences is extremely dependent upon Physics. I would encourage all the high school students to pursue their dream and contribute to the field of Natural Sciences as nowadays the inflow of students into this branch has reduced. Indeed there would be difficult times, but it’s at those times that you need to prove your worth to continue. Competition is there in every field of life, and the struggle is what gives the enjoyment at the end of the day, so go out and start achieving. At last I would just like to say, that studying Physics gives you more than you could ever realize because if someone could realize it he would be the next great Physicist to come up with some theory.
