About Anooj S S

Mr Anooj S. S. is a Scientist (Agriculture Research Service) working on biosystematics of true flies (Diptera) at the Division of Entomology, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi; a premier institute in agricultural research under the Govt. of India. He is especially interested in hover- flies (Diptera: Syrphidae): an ecologically important family of true flies and focuses on phytophagous genus like Eumerus, saprophytes of subfamily Eristalinae and myrmecophilous subfamily Microdontinae. After completion of his undergraduate studies in Agriculture from Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur, Kerala he perused master’s degree in Entomology with ICAR-Junior Research Fellowship at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Haryana. Ever since his joining in the Agriculture Research Service at IARI in 2015 he had undertaken numerous insect exploration trips across India, especially in the Himalayas and the Western Ghats to study the biodiversity of hover-flies and other true flies found in the region and has published many research works in internationally and nationally reputed journals. He uses methods of conventional taxonomy as well as molecular and bio-ecological data to address the questions related to biodiversity in general and species delimitation, and phylogeny in particular and looks forward to use hover-flies as model organism to study mimicry, coevolution and species conservation. Apart from research work he is also involved in insect (true flies) identification service, maintenance, augmentation and digitization of dipteran specimens at the National Pusa Collection (NPC) of IARI, handles courses on insect biodiversity for post graduate level students at IARI and is also involves in extension activities for farmers. He had attended many workshops and conferences related to his core research area including the 10 th International Symposium on Syrphidae 2019, at University of Aegean, Greece and had also delivered invited lectures at the National level Workshop on Taxonomy of Diptera 2020, at University of Calicut, Kerala. Presently he is a Co-PI of the institute project on Biosystematics of insect, fungi, bacteria and nematodes of economic Importance, Consortium research platform on conservation agriculture and Twinning North Eastern Region project (Dept. of Biotechnology, DBT, Govt. of India) on Integrative taxonomy of insect pests of rice and their natural enemies from North-East India. He is a life member of the Entomological society of India, New Delhi and member of editorial advisory committee and reviver of the Indian Journal of Entomology and associate editor of the Indian Entomologist. Being a nature enthusiast he is also interested in other faunal forms like Odonata, Orthoptera, butterflies, mantids, amphibians, reptiles and birds and had worked in close associations with experts in these groups.
