About Dr. Zakiyabanu Malek
I (Zakiyabanu S. Malek) have 15 years of academic career as a lecturer and assistance professor. I bring an extensive presentation, research, and organizational skills that I have built over the years during my professional tenure. Currently, I am working as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Computer Technology, GLS University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. I am not a teacher just by profession but it is my passion. I enjoy teaching and feel proud of fulfilling academic duties. As a computer science teacher, I strongly believe that to develop a strong foundation, students should be able to relate computer science fundamentals with real-world problems and their practical implementations. I also believe that an important skill that students should develop is an intuition for problems, which is gained through a solid understanding of theoretical computer science and their practical implementations in computer labs. Problem-solving is one of the key abilities which is rated highly by the IT industry and it can only be developed by continuous practice. I believe if students can correlate between the real world challenges and if/how they can be solved by programming/automation, they can take it to the next level. So I like to give them real-world problems to solve it through programming. e.g. to start with I ask them to write an algorithm to make a coffee and implement a program for the same. Not only is this an opportunity to keep the lectures fresh and relevant, but it makes the subject more interesting for students. I also point out and share relevant reference books, research papers, case studies, web pages, forums, and blogs where they can see more professional material related to the discussion because this can reinforce the value of the topic and real-world use cases. Furthermore, I embrace technologies that facilitate discussion, interaction, and collaboration. I even try to manage extra classes for weaker students and implement effective teaching techniques for them to be successful. I feel touched and honored when my student quotes me as "Mother of GLS", it's overwhelming and encouraging, keeps me going. Apart from teaching I am deeply involved in planning and supervising student's assignments, managing attendance, doubt solving, revision work for weaker students, lecture preparation, and preparing supplement notes for students. I also managed the co-curricular activities like co-ordinator of State-Regional and National level Technical Festival, Sports, Youth Festival, Days Celebration, Industry visit, WDC, CSR(Corporate Student Responsibility), Alumni meet, Orientation Program, and Farewell. During my tenure, I authored two books, published 14 research papers in International and National journals and conferences. I participated in various FDPs (Faculty Development Programmes) being conducted by various universities. I serve as a reviewer in many international conferences as well as part of the editorial board in a couple of international journals. I also attended various academic seminars, workshops, and refresher courses. I have also attended effective teaching workshops that helped me to enhance my skills as a teacher. In particular, workshops dedicated to presentation skills, managing discussion, interpersonal skills, and conflict management have helped me develop my teaching style.
