About Dr. Pushpa H D

I am Dr. Pushpa H.D. working as a scientist (GPB) at ICAR-IIOR, Hyderabad. I have completed my graduation in agriculture (B.Sc. Ag) from UAS, Dharwad during the year 2009, and Master’s degree in Genetics and plant breeding from UAS, Bengaluru during the year 2011. In a master's degree, I have worked on breeding for high seed yield and high oil content in groundnut and developed transgressive segregants for yield. I have completed a doctoral degree in Genetics at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi in the year 2015. In the doctoral degree program, I have worked on molecular breeding for the development of mustard cultivars which included identification of new markers for low glucosinolates, validation of identified markers, and its application in marker-assisted selection. In 2015, I have joined as a scientist in the ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research, Hyderabad where I have worked on the development of sunflower restorer and maintainer lines along with the development of new CMS lines. Initiated work on the development of improved breeding lines/varieties in Niger. Started working on safflower breeding by the development of gene pool, inbreds, parental lines through recombination, and heterosis breeding. I have developed new maintainer lines in sunflower for high seed yield (up to 20.0g), for high oil content (Up to 36%), genotypes for earliness, and involved in the development of new restorer lines in sunflower for high seed yield, for high oil content (Up to 40%), for drought tolerance with better root traits. I have developed 4 new CMS lines with oil content up to 37% and 2 new CMS lines for short stature. Associated in developing a new safflower hybrid ISH-402 identified by VIC for all India cultivation in both Zone-I and II under rainfed and irrigated conditions in the year 2020. Currently handling one DBT funded project “Exploitation of genetic and genomic resources for improvement of niger (Guizotia abyssinica L.F. Cass) through breeding and biotechnological tools” (total budget Rs. 848.908 lakhs) and two Institute projects on Safflower and Niger. Published more than 20 research articles, seminar abstracts, and popular articles. Undergone several pieces of training related to my subjects and project handling.
