About Dr. N Chandrakanth

Presently, I am working as Scientist C in Silkworm Breeding and Genomics department at Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSRTI), Berhampore (WB), Central Silk Board under Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India. I have research expertise in Silkworm Breeding and Silkworm Genomics. On a whole I have 8 years of research experience contributed by 3 years as Junior Research Fellow, 1 year as Senior Research Fellow at CSRTI, Mysore and >4 years as Scientist at CSRTI, Berhampore. In this research tenure I have authored more than 20 papers in National and International Journals and contributed a chapter for a book. I have been awarded Ph.D. in Biotechnology from University of Mysore, Mysore. Furthermore, I have been Biotech Industrial Training Program (BITP) fellow for the year 2010 jointly sponsored by DBT and BCIL, New Delhi. I have presented many papers in several National and International conferences and seminars. My research interest is to develop high temperature tolerant silkworm hybrids through Molecular breeding approaches. So far, in my research career, I have identified two microsatellite markers strongly associated with thermo-tolerance in silkworm, Bombyx mori. By applying these markers I have developed two silkworm double hybrids tolerant to high temperatures through marker assisted selection. I have also quantified the expression of heat shock proteins and correlated them with thermo-tolerance in silkworm through quantitative PCR method. Anybody, interested to do research work/ dissertation/ internship under my supervision can write to me at chandra.nalavadi@gmail.com.
