About Dr. Surjya Narayan Datta
Dr. Surjya Narayan Datta, eminent academician and researcher pursued his B.F.Sc. from Faculty of Fishery Sciences, WBUAFS, Kolkata; Masters from College of Fisheries, G.B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar and Ph.D in Fisheries Resource Management from Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), Mumbai. Dr. Datta has over 15 years of research experience in the field of Fish population dynamics, population genetics, climate change, pond cage aquaculture, breeding and reproductive biology of catfish. He is presently working as an Assistant Professor (Fisheries), Department of Fisheries Research Management, College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana and engaged in all three major mandates of the University viz. teaching, research and extension. He joined in the present post on 14th January, 2011. Dr. Datta guided four M.F.Sc. students as major advisor and five M.F.Sc and one PhD students as Co-advisor. He also developed six theory and practical manuals of B. F. Sc. courses. Dr. Datta has completed seven research projects as PI/ Co-PI/ associated scientist and presently handling two projects funded by UGC, ICAR, PPCB and RKVY. He has standardized the fingerling, brood-stock rearing and breeding technology of high value Pangas catfish in Punjab and bred the fish first time in North India. He also standardized the technology of pond cage aquaculture. Students under his guidance are working in the field of Ecology, biodiversity of natural water bodies and population genetics of commercially important fish species of Punjab. Dr. Datta has published more than 45 research article in peer reviewed journals of national and international repute and presented his work in different international and national seminars/ symposiums. He is actively involved in extension activities and delivered numbers of extension lectures in different platforms to farmers and entrepreneurs. He also published numbers of extension articles and provided hand hold supports to farmers for solving their problems. Dr. Datta is recipient of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) by Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) in M.F. Sc, Institutional fellowship in Ph.D from C.I.F.E. Mumbai. He also awarded fellowship under “Training of Scientist abroad – Second Push to Agriculture development in Punjab” and attended three months international training in the field of “Climate change and Fisheries: using biomarkers to predict fish growth and fitness in commercial species” at University of Antwerp, Belgium in 2016. He also bagged ‘First prize in oral presentation’ in IESIC, 2016; ‘Best oral presentation award’ in International Conference on Ecosystem Health and Fisheries of Indian Inland waters: Multiple stressors, Management and Conservation, in 2020.For his outstanding contribution in research he also received ‘Best Researcher Award’, College of Fisheries for the year 2018-19 conferred by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana.
