About Dr. Vikas Gupta
Dr Vikas Gupta was born at Udhampur in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on 3 September 1983. He completed
his BSc Agriculture from SKUAST-J Jammu in 2004 followed by MSc (Genetics & Plant Breeding) from CCS
University Meerut in 2006. After that he completed Ph D (Plant Breeding & Genetics) from Punjab Agricultural
University Ludhiana during 2011. He received merit certificate for securing first position in M Sc and merit
scholarship during Ph D. During Ph D, he worked on the fine mapping and transfer of bacterial leaf blight
resistance genes from Oryza gleberrima and Oryza barthii into Pusa 44. He was also associated in the mapping
of bacterial blight resistant gene Xa38 from Oryza nivara. He qualified ICAR-SRF exam for Ph D and also
cleared ICAR-NET/ARS during 2011. He joined Agricultural Research Service in the Indian Council of
agricultural Research New Delhi in 2011 and presently he is serving as a Scientist at ICAR-Indian Institute of
Wheat and Barley Research Karnal, Haryana. His specialty areas are breeding wheat for higher yield and biotic
stress resistance. He has been associated in the development and release of seven wheat varieties in the North
Western and North Eastern plains of the country for different sowing conditions. He has been associated in the
development of bio-fortified bread variety WB 02. He has been associated in the development and registration
of novel germplasm for different traits like head scab resistance, heat tolerance, drought tolerance,
sedimentation value and grain micronutrients. He is actively involved in the All India Coordinated Wheat and
Barley Improvement Project. He worked as a visiting scientist in the Washington State University, Pullman
(USA) and International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Mexico. Apart from that he has published
several research papers in national and international journals.
